Before you make changes via Preferences, open Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, go to the Menu Bar, and navigate to View -> Show/Hide -> Tools Pane to hide it accordingly. Once that is done, return to the Menu Bar and navigate to Edit -> Preferences.
